The Top Health Issues Affecting Our Canine Companions

The Top Health Issues Affecting Our Canine Companions
As a dog trainer, I've seen my fair share of pups dealing with various health conditions. While proper diet, exercise, and preventive care can help avoid many issues, there are some common canine health problems that all dog owners should be aware of.

1. Obesity
Obesity is a growing problem among domesticated dogs, often caused by overfeeding and lack of exercise. Carrying excess weight puts extra strain on a dog's joints, organs, and overall health. Obese dogs are at higher risk for diabetes, arthritis, breathing issues, and other serious conditions.

2. Dental Disease
By the age of three years old, most dogs show signs of dental disease like tartar buildup, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Poor dental hygiene can lead to infections, tooth loss, and even organ damage if bacteria spreads through the bloodstream. Regular teeth brushing and veterinary cleanings are vital for dental health.

3. Ear Infections
Dogs who love swimming, have floppy ears, overgrown hair in the ears, or allergies are prone to painful ear infections. Bacterial and yeast ear infections often cause redness, swelling, discharge, head shaking, and scratching. These can become chronic if not properly treated.

4. Skin Conditions
Allergies, grooming issues, parasites, infections, and more can cause itchy, irritating skin conditions in dogs. Symptoms like hair loss, rashes, hot spots, and excessive scratching, licking or chewing require veterinary attention to pinpoint the underlying cause and proper treatment protocol.

5. Arthritis
Like humans, dogs can suffer from degenerative joint disease and arthritis as they age. Large breed dogs are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia that leads to osteoarthritis. While arthritis cannot be cured, controlling pain, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting appropriate exercise can help arthritic dogs stay comfortable.

From luxury pups to beloved mutts, all dogs deserve a long, healthy, and happy life by their owner's side. Being aware of these common canine conditions allows you to spot potential issues early and work closely with your veterinarian to give your furry friend the best care.
